Last summer, former NFL star Derrell Smith coached DLE community members about being nimble and open-minded in making career pivots at the popular DLE Breakfast Club.
Today, the culinary star, who dazzles with his company 99EATS and Amazeballs, is heeding his own advice and expanding his career as a celebrity chef for Tastemade. After moving from his Brooklyn, NY, digs, Derrell has integrated into the vibe of his new hometown of Los Angeles, CA.
Recently featured on the popular Tastemade series, Derrell served up his recipes for vegetarian comfort food—Kale Pesto Mac and Cheese, Sweet Potato Jamaican Patties with Salsa Verde, and Banana Pudding.

Incidentally, Derrell’s Mac and Cheese recipe was a major success. The feedback and appreciation received gave him an unexplainable feeling. As Derrell attests, “Food goes beyond just eating.”
He praises his mom’s recipes, and fiercely believes that making food for others is like sharing a piece of your family. Says Derrell, “It is a way to spread love and connect with those around you.”
